The 2011 Indian Adventure will depart from
the famous Taj Mahal in Agra, India on
Saturday January 29th, 2011 and head towards the southern tip of India at Kanyakumari. We will pass through the colourful desert cities of Rajasthan; Spend a day in the bustling metropolis of Mumbai; Relax on the stunning beaches in Goa; Visit the incredible ruins of Hampi; Cycle througt the undiscovered interior of Karnataka; Pass through the princely city of Mysore; Enjoy a day or two in a wildlife reserve; Wander around the historic British hill station of Ooty; Spin down from the heights of the Western Ghats to feast on the seafood in Cochin; And bike alongside the gorgeous backwaters of Kerela.
The Indian Adventure Bicycle Expedition features 37 riding days, each ranging from 40 – 125 km, as well as 9 rest days.
Support and Accommodations
The Indian Adventure Bicycle Expedition includes a couple tour leaders and a support vehicle.
Unlike some of our other Expeditions, there is no chef on this tour. In India, you are never far from a restaurant or road side stall selling some of the world’s tastiest foods. On this tour you decide what, when, where and with whom you want to eat!
There is no camping on the expedition and we will be staying in comfortable budget hotels each night although we will certainly throw in some very pleasant surprises!
Deposit/Entry Fee
There is a 100 Euro registration fee in addition to the entry fee.
The entry fee of 3850 Euros is due on October 29, 2010

Do you envision staying in prearranged hotels and campsites or simply find places as you go along? What about food, would the group share the cooking and all meals?

For the most part we will be staying in prearranged budget hotels/guest houses and eating in restaurants. Food and accommodation is such good value in India that cooking and camping should not be necessary. Unless, of course, people want to?

It would be good to push on a bit to Calcutta and fly home from there

Hi Jane, it would be about an extra 720miles to Calcutta via Varanasi. So I imagine a further 2 weeks cycling. I think your suggestion could be quite viable as it shouldn't make a huge difference to the cost. I had considered trying to stretch the route into Nepal but as I've never been there I don't know how accessible to roads are for cyclists. What do you think?

I think going to Varanasi and then heading north to finish in Katmandu would be perfect. Or maybe switch it up and start in Katmandu and end in Kerela?

ONE WORD OF CAUTION. IN THE LAST 20+ YEARS I HAVE VISITED AND TRAVELLED IN INDIA 9 - 10 TIMES TWICE ON MOTOR BIKE BUT NO BICYCLE. ROAD CONDITIONS ARE NOT THE BEST AND CAN BE DANGEROUS. IT'S EXTREEMLY HOT IN JANUARY TO MARCH (ATHOUGH BEST TME TO GO) 75 - 90KLM PER DAY COULD BE PUSHING THE ENDURANCE SOMEWHAT. TRUE THAT INDIA FOOD AND ACCOMMODATION IS VERY ECONOMICAL. TYPICAL MORE THAN ADEQUETE, DOUBLE ROOM $10 - $15 PER NIGHT AND OFTEN CHEAPER.
THE ROUTE IS GOOD AND INTERESTING, BUT AGAIN TRYING TO GO FURTHER IS MAKING THE TRIP A TRIAL OF ENDURANCE.
NOTHING WRONG IN INDIA PUTTING ONE'S BIKE ON THE TRAIN AND EXPLORING OTHER AREAS. TRAINS ARE EXCELLENT, SLOW BUT CHEAP.

Climate is hot in March to May end. Food wont be a problem in Kerala and accommodation too. And of course coastal areas and backwaters are excellent places one can ever dream to be

Thanks for the comments guys. Rodney made a good point about the trip becoming a trial of endurance if we extend it to Calcutta. With India being such a trying country at the best of times, I think that keeping to the original route might be for the best. I want people to leave with fantastic memories of India, not for them to start to feel completely drained and crave the end of the trip. Although I'm happy to go with what the majority feel they would prefer. Prakash, any tips that you could share from your own experiences cycling in India would be invaluable. Thanks again for all of the comments and interest. Hopefully we will soon be making this trip a reality.

I like the idea of continuing on to Calcutta via Varanasi. Nice to see an idea that gets us out of the northern hemisphere winters. I wish there were more rides that ran from late November to early March.
