This Ride starts in the ancient city of Istanbul. We will head south along the Aegean Sea, stopping at the Hellenistic and Classical Greek ruins of Pergamon and Ephesus. Eventually arriving at the Mediterranean coast, we will journey along its’ shore, witnessing the beautiful landscapes and tasting the fresh fish and produce of the region.
Nearing Syria we will stop in Antakya (Antioch) where St. Peters’ first Christian church is carved into the face of a mountain wall. Leaving Turkey we will enter the Arabic speaking countries of Syria, Jordan and finally Egypt. In Syria we will marvel at the beauty of Aleppo, enter the great souk in Damascus, and enjoy the warm hospitality of the people. Jordan brings the majesty of the desert and the mysteriousness of Petra, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Egypt offers Mt. Sinai, beaches along the Red Sea, the Great Pyramids of Giza, and at our finish line the city of Cairo.
Above are some of the highlights of the trip for the days we park our bikes, but at its’ essence, this trip will be about a bike ride connecting continents, Europe with Africa, through the Middle East. The Tour should arrive in Cairo just before Christmas 2010. If you really love your bike, there is the opportunity to join the 2011 Tourd'Afrique, which starts in Cairo just a couple of weeks later.
