I am Jo, and like being active in holidays, long Europe cycling routes, for example from home in the Netherlands to Rome (picture in Rome), walking or simple tracking in Mountains

(Kilimanjaro en Mount Kenya) As a general physician I did work in Kenya (80-83) and now I have my own practice in Holland.

Due to relatives who have made me enthusiastic for the Tour d ‘Afrique  I like very much to do a section  Khartoum to Addis Ababa. That is my holiday time only.

I am a 37 year old former athlete, lately being more addicted to the sofa with a bowl of chips and a big bottle of Coke in front of the TV, rather than sitting in the saddle. I think I’m ready for the mid-life crisis and heading out on this crazy adventure…

A year and a half ago I finished a one-year assignment through my work of electrification of private housing in Mozambique where only 12% of the population have electrical power. I love Africa, the nature and the people in the continent.

Last year I did the Elephant Highway section from Victoria Falls to Windhoek. It was a fun and interesting in many ways, but still not too entertaining going straight forward on flat, paved roads for about 10 days. This time I want hills and bumps. I talked to some of the riders doing the full tour last year for recommendations. They said The Gorge from Khartoum to Addis was bumpy and hard but also beautiful. So it will be!

I have been too most of the countries that TdA is passing through, but not Sudan and Ethiopia. This is a good opportunity to broaden the horizon a little.

I am very excited but a bit concerned since Oslo is now full of snow and it is hard to put in the necessary kilometers on the bike. Luckily I can do what I love the most; going cross-country skiing.

I have been working in many countries as Network & Data Communication Engineer, also in South Africa. I am now retired, 66 years of age. I like bicycling and I like South Africa, so this is for me a fantastic way to see parts of Southern Africa that I have never seen before.

I hadn't heard about the TDA until half a year ago and I didn't even imagine that tours like this exist. But spontaneous decisions are usually the best ones! Like buying a cross bike and a racing bike some years ago. And of course the registration for the sections from Nairobi to Lilongwe.

I've loved cycling since my childhood when I had to ride my bike to visit friends and go to my horse. Now I like this environment- and climate-friendly means of transport because it gives one the possibility to explore the countryside in a very comfortable and exciting way. My wish is that more and more people use bicycles for short distances and contribute in an easy way to emission reduction. I am looking forward to meeting you all in Nairobi - particularly my boyfriend Peter!

In January I turned 60 and my nickname is Wädi. The TDA riding from Cairo till Mbeya/Tanzania is my own birthday present.

I am a pensioner, living 4 months in Birr/Switzerland and 8 months in Somerset West/South Africa throughout the year together with my partner Uschi.

In the last 35 years my activities on the saddle brought me allover the world. Sometimes I managed to ride as a tour guide mainly in Spain, Slowenia, US America and on a trip around the world.

Actually I try to share the time between Golf, MTB and Road Bike to keep up the fitness.

“I am a lawyer working for a bank in Switzerland. As I love biking, South Africa and I always wanted to see the desert of Namibia, I am very much looking forward to combining everything and riding from Windhoek to Cape Town. See you all soon in Windhoek.

Having a great passion for Africa for many years now, I’m very glad to concretize shortly my dream to cover a part of Africa by bike in the context of the Tour d’Afrique. .

I am 38 years old and I am a nurse by profession. Before my actual professional occupation, I was engaged as a coordinator of organ transplantation in a hospital environment. What a fabulous challenge to bring about new life to men and women! In the context of the social integration of our patients, we have been organizing and participating in quite a lot of mountaineering and biking activities. Long distances during several weeks don’t put us off anymore. Take as an example the Brussels-Lisbon trip of 2.500 km that we covered in 2001!

I still am working in the same discipline, but in a different context, namely the federal administration where I’m involved in policy making. Recently I came across “Nadiatou Enfance”, a France based non-profit organization whose mission is to promote schooling and education in M’Bour, Senegal.

Fond of challenges, I’ve decided to dedicate this part of the Tour d’Afrique to “Nadiatou Enfance”. The collected funds and sponsoring will be fully donated to the current projects of the René Merceron Institute of M’Bour.

my name is Heiner and I will be one of the participants in the Tour d’Afrique 2012. Born near Zurich, Switzerland in 1947, I am married to Lisa since 1976. We have two children: Sarah (1979) and Lukas (1985). In my professional career, which will come to an end in December of this year, I was active in five different branches: furniture, tourism, international aid, transport and printing. During my engagements I lived and worked on four continents: Europe, Africa, Australia/South Pacific and North America. My business and private travels have taken me to over 60 countries so far and I am looking forward to add a few more. I have always been active in sports, but cycling was not one of them until recently.

At a dinner with cycling enthusiasts last August I heard of TDA for the first time and instantly knew that this would be THE THING for me to do to start my post-professional life with the appropriate "bang". In September I started with biking trips on my son’s bike of between 30 to 100 km on consecutive days totalling about 2’500 km by now. Meanwhile I have my own bike.

Because I am still a bit anxious of how I will cope with the daily average of 125 km on the TDA, I am committed for the first leg from Cairo to Khartoum so far with the very strong intention to add more to hopefully complete the whole tour all the way to the Table Mountain. I am exited about it and look forward to the start in Cairo in January and the new experiences to follow.

I'll take part to Zambezi Zone Section as BOOTLEG "ambassador" to test one of the Cinelli Bootleg we are developing with TdA team.

I'd like to do the Full Tour but right now can only get enough vacation time to do one Section.

 

My hope is to enjoy TdA, explore Zambia and find myself

I'm a rookie bike handler with a near-permanent chain grease stamp on my calf.

I'm currently on a one year sabbatical with my boyfriend, Jonny. He is going to be riding from Cairo to Cape Town, and I'll join the tour in Nairobi, so I'm hoping he'll keep me updated on all the in-jokes so that I can seamlessly integrate into the group. My first night at dinner, I'll be like, "HAHAHA, remember the time when that guy over there did that embarrassing thing? That was my favourite time," and everyone else will be looking around at each other asking, "Who IS that?"

Seriously, though, I'm looking forward to it. It'll be great to meet you all.
