Arrival in the Sudan

We are all safely in Sudan. The boat ride that promised to be torturous turned out to be an unforgettable experience, and short of a massive bathroom overflow, quite pleasant. Those that weren’t “fortunate” enough to get a cabin slept under the stars as our ferry steamed across the massive artificial lake. Those up early enough were treated to the sight of the Temple of Abu Simbel; a massive ancient temple disassembled brick by brick by concerned archeologist’s years ago and moved above the line that was to be flooded with the creation of the lake upon which we sailed. Upon arrival in Wadi Halfa we were treated to the sights, sounds and chaos of the unloading process. A few short hours later we were all passed Sudanese immigration and munching on delicious falafel sandwiches. This was followed by an eerily quiet quick bike jaunt from the terminal to our current camp ground inside an old soccer stadium. Some boys are playing Frisbee while others are busily exchanging the last of their Egyptian pounds into Sudanese currency. It is safe to say that all here are excited to get another country under our belts.
