Distance: 1,200km

This section begins in Cusco, the gateway to Machu Picchu, "the lost city of the Incas" and the most famous monument of their culture. Constructed with traditional dry stone walls in 1450, it was abandoned 100 years later as the empire was collapsing under the Spanish conquest. Archaeologists have been examining the ruins for decades debating whether it was created as a place of worship, for strategic defense, or astronomical study. The mountain roads will include passes at 4,200 m, where cyclists will have to endure colder temparatures and thin air. As the tour descends towards the Pacific we will pass the petroglyphs of the Nazca plains, whose origins still baffle most modern scientific inquiries. Our last days follow the Pacific coastal roads through an arid region lined with spectacular beaches towards the Peruvian capital of Lima, where the expedition concludes.
