The Inca Highlands section has the potential to be one of the most challenging and perhaps the most rewarding. It begins in La Paz, Bolivia - a city at 3640 m. If you choose to start here, be sure to plan for a few days of acclimatization before the tour departs. Shortly after leaving La Paz we will cross the border into Peru where the route explores the shorelines of Lake Titicaca. It is not only the largest lake on the continent but it is also the highest lake in the world. The small agricultural communities along its shores have become popular tourists destinations to visit, such as the colonial churches of Puno and the "Uros" (floating villages built on artificial islands manufactured from reeds). The tour continues to Cuzco, the gateway to Machu Picchu, "the lost city of the Incas" and the most famous monument of their culture.
